How to write content AI engines can cite
AI engines quote passages that answer a question clearly and stand on their own. Here is how to structure, source and maintain content they can cite.
Put the answer first
Content that AI engines quote tends to answer a specific question directly, in a passage that makes sense on its own. The simplest habit is answer-first writing: under each heading, state the answer in the first one or two sentences, then add the reasoning, detail and exceptions. A model pulling a passage for an answer can lift those opening sentences without needing the rest of the page.
Engines do not publish how they choose passages, but a direct, accurate answer is also what readers and search snippets reward, so there is little downside.
One idea per section
- Use headings that match the questions people ask, such as what a service costs or how long it takes, rather than clever labels.
- Cover one idea per section, so each passage has a clear subject.
- Make each section stand alone. Name the thing you are discussing instead of pointing back to an earlier section.
- Use numbered steps for processes and HTML tables for comparisons.
Give the model something specific to lift
Vague claims are hard to quote. Specifics are easy:
- One-sentence definitions of the terms you use.
- Numbers, names, prices, dates, locations and steps, stated plainly in the text.
- Links to primary sources, such as official documentation, regulations or original data, rather than to someone else's summary.
- A named author or business with relevant experience, so the source is identifiable.
Keep facts consistent and current
Engines tend to trust facts they can confirm in more than one place. If your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directory listings disagree on your name, address, hours, prices or services, an answer may repeat the wrong version or leave you out. Keep one source of truth and update every profile from it.
Update dates honestly. Change a modified date only when the content meaningfully changes; Google's guidance on byline dates warns against artificially freshening pages. Where it fits, add structured data such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product or Article, using the same facts shown on the page. It does not guarantee a citation, but it states your facts in a form machines read reliably.
Do not hide the answer
A model can only quote text it can read. Make sure your key answers are in the page's HTML as real text, not:
- Inside images, infographics or video without the same information in text.
- In tabs, accordions or load-more panels that fetch their content only after a click.
- Rendered only by client-side JavaScript, since not every crawler runs scripts.
- Behind a login, form or cookie wall.
A quick test: view the page source, or load the page with JavaScript turned off, and search for the answer sentence. If it is not there, some crawlers will not see it either.
