What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making your site easy for AI answer engines to find, quote and cite. Here is how it relates to SEO and where to start.
What GEO means
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your website and brand easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and cite. Those engines include ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Instead of returning a list of links, they write an answer and point to a handful of sources. GEO is about being one of those sources, or at least being named in the answer.
The term comes from a 2023 academic paper and is now used loosely for any effort to improve how often AI-generated answers mention or link to you. You will also see answer engine optimization (AEO) used for much the same idea.
How GEO relates to SEO
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Most AI answer engines retrieve pages from a search index, or fetch them live, before they write anything. If a page cannot be crawled or indexed, it cannot be retrieved, and it will not be cited. Google says standard SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews, with no extra requirements.
The differences are in what counts as success and how you measure it:
- The unit of success is a citation or mention inside an answer, not a ranked position on a results page.
- Answers combine passages from several sources, so one clear paragraph can matter more than the page as a whole.
- What other sites say about you matters, because engines tend to favor facts they can confirm in more than one place.
- Answers change from run to run, so you measure by asking the same questions repeatedly rather than checking a rank once.
What AI answer engines tend to reward
No engine publishes how it chooses sources. In practice, pages that get cited usually share four traits:
- Crawlable
- The engine's crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by a firewall or CDN, and the main content is in the HTML rather than loaded only by JavaScript.
- Answer-first
- Each section states the answer near the top, in plain sentences, before the detail.
- Standalone
- Each section makes sense on its own, so a model can lift one passage without the rest of the page.
- Corroborated
- The same facts about you appear on your own site and on independent sources such as reviews, directories, press and forums.
How to start
- Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings so the search crawlers of the major AI engines can reach your pages.
- Confirm your important pages are indexed in Google and Bing, since several AI engines draw on those indexes.
- Write down the real questions customers ask before they buy, in their words, and group them by intent.
- Rewrite the pages that should answer those questions so the answer comes first and each section stands alone.
- Make your business facts (name, address, prices, services) match across your site and your profiles elsewhere.
- Ask those questions in each engine on a regular schedule, and record whether you are cited or mentioned and who is cited instead.
GEO is not a separate trick layered on top of a weak site. Clear, accurate, well-structured pages that search engines can index are still the foundation.
